When multiple coats of paint must be removed, the work might need to be done in steps. If the paint doesn’t lift off easily when given the scraper test, apply another heavy coat of remover on top of the first coat and let it work as long or longer than the first coat. To determine if the paint has loosened adequately, test it with a scraper.Ī plastic scraper of the type used to clean auto windshields works well, and will not gouge wood as quickly as might a metal scraper. In general, if no time is specified, the stripper should be allowed to work for at least 10 minutes. Instruction on containers sometimes specify minimum times, other instructions are vague. Water-rinse strippers should not be used on veneered surfaces. Water-rinse strippers are the best choice when paint is being removed from bricks or other masonry, metal and some wood surfaces. Some strippers can be washed off with water, making it easier to rinse stripper sludge from convoluted or porous surfaces.
Semi-paste strippers cling well to vertical surfaces and are best for all-around stripping. The liquid is usually less expensive, but is most useful on horizontal surfaces such as table tops or doors laid flat. Strippers are sold in both liquid and semi-paste form. Urethane finishes might require a high-strength product, such as Savogran’s Super-Strip or Bix Stripper.
Typical strippers will remove oil-based and latex paint, enamel, varnish, lacquer and shellac. Even alternative removal methods - such as heat, scraping or sanding - are dangerous with lead paint, because vapors or particles of lead can be released into the air of the home. Removal of woodwork for outside stripping also should be considered if there is any possibility that the paint is the old, lead-based type.

In some cases, such as stripping indoor trim or cabinets, the woodwork can be removed and either stripped outdoors or taken to a professional stripping service. When paint must be stripped indoors, consider alternate methods such as a heat gun, a remover that does not contain methylene chloride, or use sanding or scraping to remove the paint.
